The indiscriminate disposal of waste such as solid, biomedical and household hazardous waste irreversibly damages soils, aquifers and the atmosphere, with severe consequences to human health and nature. There is an urgent need to recognize that waste management is an issue that offers both challenges and opportunities; its effect and impact vary from place to place, which need unique solutions appropriate to its nature and context. It requires promotion of an attitudinal change to treat waste as a resource, encourage safe and proper recycling and avoid wastage to preserve our ecosystems and protect planet Earth.
Realizing the need for sound management of waste, India Recycle and Waste Management Co. and the Centre for Environment Education, with technical support from the EU-funded Action Plan Support Facility - Environment Component, have come together to organize the Waste & Recycling Conference of the Indian Environment Summit 2009. This summit introduces a cutting edge knowledge-based programme addressing the current challenges, possible solutions, and capacity building requirements of the waste management & recycling sector in India using national and international lessons and exchanges. It also aims to promote the idea that while waste is a ‘misplaced’ resource its management requires proper understanding of the nature of the waste, its possible reuse potential, the correct methodologies for collection, storage, recycling and final disposal.
